As every car lover knows, even the tiniest scratch or dent can mar your vehicle’s beauty. Thankfully, auto scratch repair carried out by trained technicians can make those annoying scratches or dents disappear. An expert auto detailing and auto appearance facility not only offers scratch and dent removal services, it can also provide hail damage repair, auto glass repair, wheel repair and more. Whether you are dealing with one small scratch or a number of blemishes making an eyesore of your paintwork, Pro Auto Spa can make it look as good as new.

Cars can get two kinds of scratches: deep and superficial. Superficial scratches do not penetrate the clear coat or the base paint, while deep scratches go right down to the primer coat or even bare metal. Superficial scratches can be made to disappear in a matter of hours, while even deep ones can be eliminated in less than a day. Scratches aren’t the only problem though: there are also dents and chips to worry about. They can all be handled with minimal fuss by experts with the right tools, products and techniques.

Does insurance cover scratches on my car?

We often get asked if our scratch repair services are covered by insurance. The answer is, it depends. Your insurance policy should cover scratches if they are the result of vandalism or a collision. In this case, we’re not talking about a major collision – that would involve much more damage than a few scratches. We’re referring to minor damage that could result from someone taking a key to your car in the parking lot, or an accidental scrape from making contact with trees or bushes on a narrow road. If, on the other hand, you have collected a couple of scratches over an extended period, and you can’t remember how they happened, your insurer is unlikely to cover their repair. In cases where your scratch and dent repairs are covered by insurance, you will typically have to pay a deductible. The amount of the deductible will depend on the details of your policy.

How can I cover up scratches on my car?

It is sometimes possible to cover up a scratch rather than getting a full repair treatment. Your success in doing so will depend on how deep the scratch is and the tools you have on hand. If the scratch goes through to the bare metal, the job will take a bit longer and require more care – especially if any rust is starting to show. The most important thing when touching up any part of your paintwork is to make sure you get exactly the right color paint. Check your owner’s manual to find the correct paint code that was used on your vehicle, and then buy the matching touch-up kit.

Steps to remove scratches from a car

Minor, superficial scratches can easily be removed with one of the many polishing compounds and scratch repair formulas on the market. The repair process usually goes something like this:

  • Step 1: Wash and dry the car.
  • Step 2: Apply the compound to the scratch with a microfiber cloth using a back-and-forth motion with firm pressure.
  • Step 3: Wipe dry with a microfiber towel and assess the repair.
  • Step 4: Keep repeating steps 2 and 3 until the scratch becomes invisible.
  • Step 5: Once you have repaired the scratch, apply the product to a larger surrounding area so that the touch-up blends in with the rest of the paintwork.

Scratch repair, like all car paint and coating treatments should be done under shelter, away from direct sunlight.

For deeper scratches, it is best to use an orbital dual action polisher rather than applying the product by hand, as this will exert greater pressure and allow the product to penetrate to the bottom of the scratch. For truly flawless scratch repair work, it is best to entrust your vehicle to professionals.

How does paintless dent repair work?

What about dents? Surely they can’t be removed so easily? While this obviously depends on the severity of the dent, repairs can be done very effectively by using paintless dent repair (PDR).

PDR might be described as a gentler, smaller-scale version of the kind of auto body work that gets done on a car after a major collision. It is a method of reshaping the panel from the inside, without any need to fill or cover the damage with paint. We use specialized tools and procedures to press and massage the panel back to its original shape from behind the dent.

PDR is quicker and less expensive than other dent repair methods. Even more, it actually removes the dent and restores the metal back to its original shape. It is the best method to use on small dents resulting from causes such as hail damage or shopping carts in the supermarket parking lot. It is an expert procedure that involves a skilled technician using specialized tools. PDR is an established, effective repair technique that is approved by all leading car manufacturers.

Is it possible to fix any dent?

PDR can remove between 80 and 90 percent of dents. The two main factors that determine whether a dent can be repaired through this method are the level of damage to the paintwork and the complexity of the dent. A small simple dent without creases in the metal and with the paint still intact can be fixed with PDR. If the dent is not too severe, but there is damage to the paintwork, PDR can be used to restore the panel to its normal shape and the paintwork can then be touched up using scratch repair methods. Deeper and more complex dents with harsh creases will probably have to undergo heavy-duty auto body repair.
